5 (Un)Employment Myths

The first semester of CICS will be end in less than 14 days. Many professors suggested us that we are supposed to prepare ourselves and career goals before summer 2010. Thus, it is important to learn the unemployment rate, career market, potential competitors, and US economics. There are many confusing reasons why many new grad students are unemployed so we need to understand the myths of unemployment which can help us to gain more opportunity to success.

Myth#1 – the greater your qualifications, the better
This might not be a benefit. If you know too much sometimes, it can be overqualified. The company may think that you can perceive to be a threat to their company security. Thus, do not put too much information which may against you in your resume. Try to put the essential and related skills carefully as you can in writing and in person.

Myth#2 Always “Dress for Success”
As employers are looking for the “fit in” person in the right position and the company dress code is business casual. If you present at an interview with the expensive fine suit, you may not be considered as the right fit! Before an interview or visiting the office, you have to learn about the company, watch going in and out people, and see how they dress. The simplest way is to ask someone in the company what the dress code is.

Myth#3 Most interesting jobs are not advertised
Many employers always post available jobs and positions on their website today because it is a lot cheaper, consume less time, can be reachable 24/7. Many jobs are posted internally for their own employees. However, if you really want to work with the company, you need to often check the websites of companies also.

Myth#4 Make sure that you deliver enough information and contact
The follow-up process is necessary but not too much. You can increase your strong interest to them for getting an interview by calling or emailing. First of all, you need to prepare the unique short introduction and answers for possible questions that the employers may ask you. Don’t get confused. This process objective is to get a face-to-face interview. You should not deliver too much information but give them only what they are looking for from you.

Myth#5 Keep in mind “nothing is forever”
If you already had a job, the best situation in the economic crisis is to keep opening your eyes and mind for new opportunity. Don’t be unprepared and think ahead because you may be unexpectedly sideswiped.

Six Sigma

According to gaining SSGB (Six Sigma Green Belt Certification) from Master Degree of Engineering Management from San Jose State University, California, I think Six Sigma is a great business tool for process improvement and quality management. Six Sigma is originally developed by Motorola. The six sigma concept is to remove the errors or causes and defects, to reduce the cost, to shorten cycle time, to minimize variability in manufacturing or business processes. There are three main experts in Six Sigma method and they are Champions, Black Belts, and Green Belts.

- Champions are the leaders who implement and integrate Six Sigma methods in the organization. They act as mentor to Black Belts
- Master Black Belts are drawn from upper managers by champions. They spend 100% time as in-house coaches on Six Sigma. They support champions and lead Black Belts and Green Belts.
- Black Belts are lead by Master Black Belts to apply and execute Six Sigma Methodology to the projects.
- Green Belts are employees who implement Six Sigma methods with all jobs responsibilities with the control of Black Belts.

Besides, there are two project methodologies developed from Plan-Do-Check-Act and they are DMAIC and DMADV.

1.DMAIC is for improving an existing process

2.DMADV is for creating new process designs

By the late 1990s, about two-thirds of the Fortune 500 organizations had begun Six Sigma initiatives with the aim of reducing costs and improving quality. In recent years, some practitioners have combined Six Sigma ideas with lean manufacturing to yield a methodology named Lean Six Sigma.

My Conclusion for Communication Theory

According to the importance of communication, it is one of everyday activities enables human life complete. Human communication is difficult to define because it depends on experiences of individuals and many factors . There are five senses in human communication which are sense of sight, touch, smell, hearing, and taste. Human communication pervades the human condition. It is everywhere in any kinds of human activities. That is the reason why people attempt to explain and control the human communication. The other method to study about human communication is to learn from the other kinds of human activities, for instance dancing. There are many similarities between dance and communication because of the multiple forms and purposes. People dance with patterns, movement, and creativity and the participants can enjoy or have a feedback from the dancing. Moreover, People dance for many reasons: to entertain, to persuade, and to allure. Those are also the same reasons for human communication. Therefore, the effective communication cannot be limited only to the result and understanding. There is no single measure of communication effectiveness, as well as, nothing can evaluate all dances.

Defining human communication is varied responses which are based on the factors, and three concepts; level of observation, intentionality, and judgment ">(Littlejohn & Foss, 2008). The verbal and nonverbal messages can be translated differently depended on the matrix of culture and individual’s experiences. Confliction happens when people from different backgrounds communicate or work together.

Thus, we need to be aware of the purpose of communication, format of messages, and different background of person whom we are communicating with. From the components of communication process, the fact is that communication is never 100%. Defining and understanding communication theories will help people to create effective communication and to gain more tools to improve the communication which is beneficial for human activities. When we are aware of what constitutes communication we will be successful and effective, whether it is a request for a cup of water from twenty-year married wife or a ten-year contract between international customers.

2 Types of Communication Messages

There are two types of communication messages; verbal and nonverbal. The examples of verbal messages are speaking, listening, and presenting. The speaking is the fastest and easiest way to communicate in the society. Listening is the way to gather and share information or ideas to reach the goal. A good presentation does not only include the slides or useful information but it needs to be also well-performed. The presenters need to tell the audiences what presenters want to them, next step is to tell them, and final step is to conclude what presenters already told them. These steps will help the audiences understand the presenters and help both presenters and audiences meet the agenda.

The non-verbal forms of communications are gesture, attitudes, culture, beliefs, and expression. Communication specialists estimate that two-thirds to three fourths of all communication is nonverbal (Novinger 2001, p. 4) and over 90 percent of human communication is nonverbal. The average can vary by different cultures. Culture is an individual way of perceiving and responding to the values, beliefs, attitudes, and preconceptions which themselves result from individual influences and experience (Barnard 1995, p. 14). Our culture has taught us our behavior since we were born and most of behavior is unconscious. Communication is a system of behavior (Novinger 2001, p.4). Thus, all communications are the results from matrix of culture. That is the reason why confusion can happen when people from different culture communicate or work together; people in the society need to adapt and understand the differences by learning human communication theory.

Blog Survey

create_web.png

From the preliminary DCC survey on Tuesday 602 class (by surveymonkey.com), the survey needs to collect the blogger’s pre-experiences and backgrounds. From the results, it shows that most students have blogged only one or none which is a small number. Most of them just read other’s blogs but they were not much eager to creating one themselves. Bloggers are interested in Technology, Personal Life, and News. Moreover, a group of people follows or interacts with the blog only once a month but most of them interact more often, such as more than once a week or more than once a day. From the interaction, it shows that people believe weblog as an effective medium for online communication and it is not too difficult for internet users to learn how to blog. This result may be an impact from the background of the users because most students earned technical degree from their undergraduate programs.

Anyway, the exit survey of blogging may change the idea and vision of cics students and bloggers. After more than 2 months of weblog requirement, cics bloggers know how to blog, what should be blogged, and why they blog the specific issue. From my opinion, I have not blogged only the required topics but also blogged for my interest topis. I was not used to blog anything technical and informative before. Most of the topics that I blogged in the past are only about me and myself... just like all the teens...we love to talk about ourselves. Due to weblog assignment, I am more interested in reading other blogs and creating informative ones myself. And I think that it is an effective tool for me to communicate and reach a group of people, cics friends, in the short time period.

Searching Tools

Searching tool by Amazon and Monster.com. Searching tool is the most popular tool on the internet. People use searching tools to find the study, research, pictures and more on google.com. If a professor is looking for a book and he needs to get it in a few days. In the past decade, he might call a librarian and ask for help but he can do it himself today. He can find his wanted book on amazon.com with the price list from people or shop who sell it. He can pick the edition of the book, the price that he wants to pay, and the time of delivery.

The other website that uses the search engine tool is monster.com. The website is for people looking for a job and for company looking for the right man for the right job. Many companies register on monster website and post the available jobs, and company profile. Thus, the job seekers can go to the website and search for a job. Under the list, each job consists of candidate requirements, qualifications, job functions, company profile, and contact information. Internet users do not need to buy a newspaper to get a job page and do not need to spend time to look for information which is limited on the newspaper ads. They can go to monster.com 24/7 with no fee to register and to get an updated job list every day via email. Moreover, they do not have to make a phone call to ask for more job detail. They can see and consider on the website if their abilities fit the qualifications. Finally, they can apply a job online via company website, email, and monster.com at anytime and anywhere.
