Henry Luce and the NewspaperMagazine World
With our discussions lately over the history of telecommunications, I decided to find out who was the "big wig" in the newspaper/magazine industry. It turns out it was a man named Henry Luce along with his long time friend and partner Briton Hadden. Since we deal with research in this class, and I hold any kind of writiing close to my heart, I decided this was a great topic to blog on.
Henry Luce, often called “father time” was a brilliant man born in China, but moved to the US when he was 15. At Yale, he met and became a partner with Briton Hadden and they worked together on the Yale Daily News. He went off to Oxford and continued to work in the newspaper circle, but eventually met back up with Hadden writing for the Baltimore News. At age 23, Luce and Hadden created Time Inc. (the largest magazine publisher in the world) and Luce worked as the business manager for the Time magazine. Luce also created the Fortune magazine as well as Life, along with Sports Illustrated. His magazines were read nation-wide and even caught the attention during the 1940 presidential election when he offended President Roosevelt by printing information that was incorrect. All in all, Luce was a major success in the press and mass communication.
