Values to Live by in CICS

In CICS we have a set of shared values that we live by. These values are Integrity, professional behavior, personal respect, candor, commitment, entrepreneurial orientation, institutional responsibility but center goals focus, quality commitment, loyalty, leadership, communication, reality, and outcomes-oriented activities. I think there are three of these that stand out above the rest.

Integrity
In CICS we must have “integrity in what we do; there can be no question about our promises being kept, and our operations being above reproach.” In our program what this means is that if a teacher has an assignment that is due on a certain date than it is actually due on that date. It also means that if you say you are going to do something then you better stand by your word. In business integrity is very important and people look for this quality in you.

Professional Behavior
Along with integrity is professional behavior, in CICS we say that we hold fast to the obligation of responsible behavior. We consider it never enough to meet the minimum expectations. What this means to me is that if you have an assignment it is never enough to just go through the motions. By being a professional you have got to meet each challenge and assignment and meet it with a sense of pride. In our classes we talk a great deal about what it means to be a professional and how your professionalism affects not only you but others as well.

Loyalty
As a member of the CICS team we recognize that honest and direct internal communication is critical. Blindness is not part of loyalty. Loyalty to me means that you never leave a team member behind. You sometimes have to pick up the team when a member is feeling down, or sometimes rely on them when you are not at your best. You have got to be loyal to your team and the center to get through the year. Without loyalty to each other we would not be able to accomplish everything we do in the year we are at Grad School.

These are a few of the shared valued in CICS that have really had an impact on me. I try to do my best to live up to these values and I think everyone else in the center try to do this as well. I think by having these values and going over what they mean it helps us to understand why we are at CICS.
