CMS, Social Networking, Elgg
This is a short weblog on CMS, a Web 2.0 technology.
After I read the O'Reilly Web 2.0 document, I looked through the 2.0 technologies and chose one at random to do for my presentation. At first, I was thinking that Content Management Systems were some rarely used office application. Little did I know, I use a CMS everytime I log into Facebook or listen to a MySpace music page. The generic definition of a CMS is an application used to create, edit, manage, and publish content on a computer platform. Those descriptive words do not make me think of a social networking site. Yes, you have the following abilities and features:
-Identification of key users and their roles
-Ability to assign responsibilities for diff. categories/types
-Capture content and publish to a repository, track & manage
-Alert msgs for changes, updates, deletes
But does that really sound like Facebook? No.
Once I began further research and fell upon 1 of 2 solutions that were listed as web-enabled, I knew exactly what a CMS was. Of course a CMS can be something other than Social Networking, but the most common use is SN. They have come to dominate many teenagers' time online. Yes they are great, but I tried to spend as little time logged in and wasting my time looking through Facebook's newsfeed, pictures, etc. It goes a little something like this and I have heard before that Great Minds Discuss Ideas; Average Minds Discuss Events; Small Minds Discuss People (Facebook users).
