"The So-called 'Language Barrier'"

"The So-called 'Language Barrier'" is a phrase I first heard from a professor in a university.

It makes you think. It makes you question the concept "language barrier."

There are certainly communications barriers for all people (and species, for that matter.)

Communication theorists often speak of these "barriers" more accurately as "noise" or problems in a communication circuit.

Yet as this accomplished, cultured and multilingual professor himself represented, good communicators overcome noise of all kinds, and get their message across. His lectures, which shifted through several languages each class, always communicated the content and tone of the message, even if you didn't catch every word.

The more global we become, the more we see that communication between peoples of good will is done every day, in every way. Language is a way. Symbolism is a way. Nonverbal behavior is a way. Music is a way.

People will find a way to communicate. Barriers of all kinds will fall away, if we will it.
