Government Stimulates Wireless Communication
On May 26, practically every wireless communication website posted an article about the $6.8 Billion stimulus package allotted to wireless communication upgrades and deployments to be distributed over the next two years; this information was based on a report from ABI Research. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), also known as the stimulus package, was passed by the federal government earlier this year.
“It will have an enormous impact on Wi-Fi and wireless broadband vendors. It will also immediately benefit a number of specific vertical industries, including healthcare, education, homeland security, the environment and the nation’s electricity infrastructure,” said ABI Vice President Stan Schatt. Roughly $1.07 Billion will be spent on Wi-Fi service upgrades and deployments. The trend in modernization is the adoption of wireless solutions. Applications ranging from mobile devices and sensors to surveillance systems and WLANs will be cited as projects in Grant proposals requesting a share of this “windfall” of funds.
Competition will be fierce between companies vying for these funds, and also for the $7.2 Billion allotted for broadband deployment. “Analysts have expected that wireless broadband technologies will play a major role in any national broadband infrastructure because of their ability to cover large areas with a single base station.” (Reed, 2009) It is foreseeable that many industries, which for whatever reason had been waiting to upgrade to wireless, will be jumping on the “broad” bandwagon.
