According to Dictionary.com, a renaissance is “the activity, spirit, or time of the great revival of art, literature, and learning in Europe beginning in the 14th century and extending to the 17th century, marking the transition from the medieval to the modern world.” The American Heritage dictionary defines Europe as, “The sixth-largest continent, extending west from the Dardanelles, Black Sea, and Ural Mountains. It is technically a vast peninsula of the Eurasian land mass.” http://www.jcn.com/humanism.php4
Throughout history there have been many renaissances. The European Renaissance however was one of the biggest. “The Renaissance (1300-1600) is marked by cultural changes, influenced by Humanism, Machiavelli, da Vinci, the Medici Family, and Martin Luther.”(Mealey, 2007) This was when there was massive change going on throughout the country. The main changes were in society, art, and religion.
This was the end of the middle ages for Europe and the start of the modern world. They were now looking back for inspiration from past heroic people and making the change into the new and modern world. The main movement throughout the renaissance was Humanism, “A key component of the Renaissance was the intellectual movement known as Humanism. Humanism was based on the study of classical Greek and roman cultures.” (Mealey, 2007)
